Slow Mo Gun
Feature Description
The SlowMo gun is a weapon that, when aimed, slows down time for a limited duration, allowing players to accurately aim and kill enemies.
Slow mode has a time limit after which it automatically cancels. When Slow mode stops, whether voluntarily from the player or because it reached its limit, time accelerates for an equivalent duration to the time spent in Slow mode.
The bullet the gun fires is large and pierces enemies, allowing players to kill bulks of enemies at a time.
Design Intention
Range and Gameplay
The Slow Mo gun is the weapon that stands at the center of the game, holding the ability around which the game mode and enemies are designed.
The Slow Mo gun is a long range, highly accurate weapon, allowing players to position themselves advantageously and snipe enemies from across the map.
The moving enemies attack only in proximity to the player. As such, in order to survive, the player’s main goal is to stay clear of them. For that reason the long range of the weapon creates an opportunity for the player not only to keep their distance but also remove any obstacles while doing so.
The weapon is designed to allow players to kill bulks of enemies at a time. During playtesting, a big takeaway was that a lot of players seemed to find fun in grouping up enemies and killing them all at the same time. It felt “satisfying” and “powerful”. The bullet’s shape and strength were modeled with that aspect in mind.
Slow Mode
When aimed, the Slow Mo gun triggers slow mode in which the player can easily aim and shoot the now slowed down targets. The main purpose of the slow mode is to boost the accuracy of the players. The difficulty of the game shouldn’t be in aiming, but positioning and avoiding hostile objects.
The rubber banding of this feature is the acceleration period that proceeds the slow mode. All moving elements (enemies, bullets, score) receive a speed boost, making it more difficult for the player to react and avoid hostile objects.
Damage
The bullet shot from the Slow Mo gun is both wide and long, allowing players to hit big groups of enemies at a time.
The damage from the Slow Mo bullet is fatal, enemies die on hit.
